AFTER breaking a world record, a Froxfield swimmer has won a place at the Down Syndrome World Swimming Championships in Canada this summer.

Down Syndrome Swimming GB has announced that Lizzie Allen (14) will join the Great Britain team for the championships in Nova Scotia in July.

Lizzie won her place after breaking the junior world record for 25m freestyle by 0.07 seconds with a time of 19.36 seconds at the European Down Syndrome Open Swimming Competition in Southampton.

The Petersfield School student won gold medals in the 25m backstroke, butterfly, freestyle and 100m breast stroke races, and silver medals in the 25m and 50m breast stroke, 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle competitions.

She also achieved four personal best times during the competition, which was held on April 21.

She said: “I am the fastest junior swimmer with Down Syndrome in the whole world, and I can’t wait to go to Canada.”

Lizzie trains with Alton and District Swimming Club and head coach Shaun Dominy said: “We are all so proud of Lizzie and her incredible achievements, she trains really hard and is a pleasure to have in the club.”

A Down Syndrome Swimming GB spokesman added: “What a weekend of swimming at the European championships, with outstanding times from the young swimmers, including Lizzie Allen.”
