SCOTT Gregory celebrated his first victory on foreign soil at America’s notorious Kiawah Island with his first call-up for a Great Britain and Ireland squad.
The Corhampton ace was named as one of five Englishmen in the 13 players selected for this summer’s St Andrew’s Trophy match against Continental Europe, to be played at Prince’s in Kent, in July.
Gregory flew to South Carolina fresh off the back of his defeat in the Spanish Amateur Championship final at the Seville Golf Club.
The England A squad member joined up with European Tour player David Dixon, as part of a four-man team that won the Kiawah Island Invitational Pro-Am, setting a record points total for the event in the process.
Gregory started the trip by teaming up with Richard Grindon in the Friendship Cup. Gregory fired a fine six-under par 66 on the Ocean Course. He followed that with a one-under par 71 at the Osprey, one of Kiawah’s five courses. That earned him the trophy for the best gross score over 36 holes, with Gregory and Grindon finishing in tenth place in the nett competition for pairs.
Gregory was straight back out on the course less than 24 hours later for the pro-am. Gregory and Dixon clicked immediately as Dixon rattled off a bogey-free, nine-under on the River course.
Coupled with Gregory’s five birdies and two eagles, the team’s better ball score of 16-under set a cracking pace.
Their total of 105 stableford points was a record for the 54-hole tournament.
