PETERSFIELD Golf Club won the Kindred Cup after a dramatic climax at Lee-on-the-Solent Golf Club.

The Kindred Cup was first played for in 1989 following an idea by Stan and the late Mary Hancock. This inter-club competition has proved to be extremely popular. Designed to promote and encourage foursomes golf with the prime objective of furthering friendship and camaraderie between Kindred clubs, there is no doubt that the objective has been achieved.

The semi final draw pitted Petersfield against Bognor Regis and Meon Valley against Alresford. The morning began with the Petersfield team feeling nervous at the prospect of competing in a semi final and perhaps a final. Team captain Darryl Phipps, who had barely slept the night before, was rallying the team trying to calm the nerves.

First pair out Colin Lavender and Ross Lobacz returned with a win from their match and after three more matches had finished the score was tied at 2-2 with the last group, team Phipps and Henry Holland still on the 18th. The 18th green was surrounded by spectators as the players approached for their putts, and they watched as Holland rushed the putt past on the 18th to leave a putt for par. Phipps was thankful for a straight putt which dropped and took the match down the first play-off hole, where Petersfield won the hole with a par to go into the final.

The final was between Petersfield and Meon Valley. The team were expecting a tough match, but Phipps felt a change in the player’s mentality and calmness in the team was circulating.

The matches started well and after nine holes Petersfield were just ahead, but there was still plenty of golf to be played. So at 1-1 in the clubhouse Steve Stockham and Paul Duncan took their match up the first play-off hole, but news was already coming that Petersfield had won the cup in other matches with a final score of 3 1/2 to 1 1/2.
