Just before half time it took a Guildford foot to divert Pruden’s errant shot past the despairing keeper, to extend the lead to 3-1.
Petersfield continued to dominate in the second half, but fine goalkeeping kept them out, with Thompson denied four times from penalty corner strikes.
Petersfield continued to defend well, with Mitchell making a couple of crucial interventions on his debut.
Guildford pulled one back while Petersfield went to sleep during a quickly taken free hit just outside the D, but the home side managed to calmly play out the rest of the game to earn the win.
