Haslemere Hockey Club’s under-12 girls produced a performance packed with determination, resilience and no little flair to finish runners-up at the prestigious Mercia Cup at Malvern College.

Playing against some of the country’s biggest and strongest junior clubs – including several Tier One sides – the Haslemere squad more than held its own during a weekend of high-quality hockey. The tournament also gave the girls the chance to stay overnight in the college dormitories.

Haslemere began the competition steadily, improving with every game before producing their performance of the season against HC Knole Park. In a fiercely-contested match, the girls battled for every ball, refused to be intimidated and eventually secured a hard-earned victory.

That result carried them through to the final, where they faced a strong East Grinstead side. By then, Haslemere had given virtually everything, but still found the energy and character to fight to the end. Although they narrowly missed out on the title, their silver medal represented a superb achievement against formidable opposition.

For coach Andrew Howard, the weekend was about far more than the result.

“The match against HC Knole Park was our gold-medal game,” said Howard.

“The girls fought and fought – and won. By the time they reached the final, they were exhausted, but they somehow found a little bit more to hang in there.

“Haslemere is a relatively small, volunteer-run club competing against much larger hockey clubs with large squads and greater resources.

“These girls may not have had all the same opportunities as some of their opponents, but they made the very most of what they had – and they were absolutely brilliant.”

The silver medal is a tangible reward for the team’s progress and commitment throughout the season, as well as a testament to the coaches, parents and volunteers who continue to support the club.
