THERE was a break in the gloomy weather for Buriton Tennis Club’s finals day.

The finals got off to an exciting start as Alice Anstee and Lydia Forbes-Manson beat Lucy Spooner and Liz Hartley in a tight three-set match in the ladies’ doubles.

The match looked to be turning in Spooner and Hartley’s favour after they poached the second set 7-5, but Anstee and Forbes-Manson showed their strength and turned the screw when it mattered, taking the deciding set 6-4.

Next up was the mixed doubles and Anstee and Chris Jones came out on top against 2012 finalists Franky Butler and James Harwood.

Anstee and C Jones were initially on the back foot, but found their rhythm when C Jones went on the offence at the net, and was backed up by his partner’s consistency from the back of the court.

The men’s singles followed with Harwood in action against Max Jones.

The first set saw some quality tennis, albeit mixed with an above-average number of doubles faults, with Jones taking it 7-5 after Harwood squandered two set points.

Jones won the second set 6-3 and takes the trophy from his brother, meaning that one of the two has been men’s champion six times in the last seven years.

The men’s doubles had to be postponed after one of the players thought the finals were taking place on the Sunday, but coach Paul Evans and his partner C Jones were the eventual champions.

The ladies’ singles was the last cup up for grabs, and new member Becky Smith won 6-1 6-2 against Anstee.
