BURITON Tennis Club hosted their annual club finals day earlier this month.

With poor weather forecast, the organisers shuffled around the schedule and the first match on court was the eagerly-anticipated men’s doubles.

In a replay of last year’s final, Max Jones and Hew Fanshawe beat James Harwood and Rob Godmon to claim their second title as a pair.

Jones’ decision not to defend his singles title from 2015 paved the way for his brother, Sam, to become this year’s champion as he beat Harwood 6-1 6-4.

Next it was the turn of the ladies and new member Alice Ansty defeated Lucy Spooner to become this year’s champion.

In what was described as a game of two sets, seven-times champions Godmon and Lucy Cousins were defeated in the mixed doubles 7-6 6-2 by M Jones and Sarah Ditcham, who claimed their second title.

Last up on the day, and finishing just in time before the rain came down, was the ladies’ doubles final.

In a particularly tight affair Ditcham and Kirsty Thomas beat the newly crowned ladies’ champion Anstey and her partner Lydia Forbes-Manson 6-4 7-6.

New members are welcome to join Buriton Tennis Club. There is a club coach who holds regular sessions at the recreation ground courts.
