Petersfield under-14 Boys 2 Romsey under-14 Boys 1: PETERSFIELD and Romsey started with equal levels of post-Christmas enthusiasm.

For much of the first quarter Petersfield held the most possession, with Ankers covering huge ground between attack and defence. Romsey in return demonstrated good individual skill but struggled to gain any attacking momentum. Petersfield looked most dangerous when playing to their stronger side, with Cooke-Priest linking with Anderson to make several driving breakaway runs into the opposition D. A long clearance from the Romsey defence caught Petersfield on the back foot against the run of play. Romsey scored to take the lead 1-0, which they held onto until the break.

Petersfield came out fighting at the start of the second half, and didn’t take long to put the Romsey defence under pressure, resulting in a number of short corners. With a well-executed set piece, Williams found the back of the net to equalise. Committed defending from Francis and Fairs, and a solid performance from McCaig in goal, kept Romsey out of Petersfield’s danger zone. A clearance from Williams found Cooke-Priest on the right wing, and a reverse pass found Roberts who accelerated towards Romsey’s goal. The shot was charged down by the keeper into the path of Chung, who slotted in the winner. Petersfield progress to the next round of the Wessex Cup.
