PETERSFIELD Hockey Club’s under-eight squad got their first experience of tournament hockey on Sunday, and it proved to be a resounding success thoroughly enjoyed by all.
For many of the team, having only picked up a hockey stick for the first time a few weeks ago this was a chance to put some of their new skills to the test within a team environment.
They grew into the tournament and steadily improved game by game.
Coolly marshalled at the back by a combination of Sands, Callard-Williams and Temple, the defensive team mopped up any pressure that came their way impressively, conceding just the one goal in five matches.
A very competitive midfield of Porter, Cleife and Shanks were quick to close down any threatening breaks from the opposition, and with at times some slick interplay and strong running provided a spring board for numerous successful attacks.
The finishing touches were provided by Crabtree and Vickery, with moments of flair from Shanks.
The young players began to understand their roles within the team and won four out of the five matches they played at the tournament, drawing the other match. Petersfield scored ten goals in their five matches.
Petersfield Hockey Club’s under-eights and under-tens train on Sundays at Dunhurst School, Bedales, at 9.30am, and new players will be made to feel welcome.
