PETERSFIELD Hockey Club’s ladies’ second team crashed to an emphatic 6-1 defeat against West Meon on Saturday.

The visitors started the brighter of the two teams, pressuring the Petersfield midfield whenever they tried to break out and keeping the ball in the Petersfield half for most of the first half.

Sheena Hulme made a number of mazing runs down the right only to become crowded out, while Lauren Preston’s clearances were blocked on the halfway line.

West Meon’s first goal came from their first short corner on ten minutes. The shot was deflected into the top left-hand corner of the goal, giving Carys Pearson no chance.

The visitors added a second and third soon afterwards, but for the last 15 minutes of the half Petersfield held firm.

The second half started with Petersfield attacking the West Meon D, but from this attack the visitors broke out down the middle of the pitch.

With two pinpoint passes three Petersfield players were bypassed and the ball found a striker unmarked running into the top of the D. A first-time touch took it past C Pearson and into the goal.

West Meon looked to press home their advantage and searched for more goals. Sue Amesbury and Joanne Jones made last-ditch tackles, and C Pearson made a number of fine saves to make sure the visitors had to work hard for the goals they scored.

Petersfield’s highlight of the game was their own well-taken goal.

With 15 minutes to go a pass from L Preston on the right was excellently dummied by two Petersfield players to allow the pass to go straight to Laura Choularton, who calmly shot past the goalkeeper.
