PETERSFIELD Hockey Club’s ladies’ second team fell to a 4-0 defeat at Haslemere’s ladies’ third team on Saturday in Hampshire Division Four (Women).

Haslemere started the stronger and showed a high level of skill throughout the game. Petersfield matched this through determined play and high tempo defence.

Haslemere had a number of good chances early on in the game and were ahead after ten minutes when a well-worked passing move resulted in a ball from the right-hand baseline being pulled back to the penalty spot and poked under a diving Carys Pearson in goal.

Haslemere pushed forward again and were repelled by good defending by Lauren Preston, Joanne Jones and Jenny Payne for large portions of the half. Petersfield started to grow into the match and Haslemere started to get frustrated as a result.

Haslemere added a second before half time from a deflected shot in open play which wrong-footed Pearson.

The second half started with Petersfield on the attack, but they were unable to pull a goal back despite their pressure.

As the game opened up with tiring legs, Haslemere had a number of clear chances.

One of the better attacks was them having a two-on-one in the Petersfield D, only for a scrambling save from Pearson and some solid defending stopping the attack.

Haslemere did score a further two goals late in the game as their extra speed and substitutes had an impact, but the final 4-0 scoreline did flatter the home side somewhat.

Petersfield made the home side battle hard for every piece of possession they had from the first to last minute.
