Winchester III 0 Petersfield 2: PETERSFIELD earned an impressive win on the road away at Winchester.
Winchester started well in the first five minutes, but Petersfield soon settled and started to control the game.
The visitors put plenty of pressure on Winchester’s goal, with Atkinson, Hind and Edwards testing the home keeper.
The breakthrough came when Atkinson passed the ball to Edwards, who beat two players and lobbed the oncoming keeper with a flick from the top of the circle to give Petersfield the lead.
Winchester piled the pressure on, winning several back-to-back penalty corners, but the defence of Hawkins, Clay, Marlow and Alder showed real determination to stop the opposition scoring.
Petersfield started the second half well and put their hosts under plenty of pressure and Atkinson almost scored when his effort hit the post and deflected straight along the goalline.
Atkinson then beat a defender and convincingly beat the keeper with a quick change of hands and speed, yet the keeper claimed Atkinson’s stick, resulting in a penalty stroke.
Captain Grinstead took the penalty stroke and slotted the ball into the bottom left-hand corner to double the visitors’ advantage.
Petersfield keeper Smith then made two crucial saves and the visitors saw out the rest of the match to claim the three points.
Petersfield will face a tough test this Saturday, when they will host league leaders Basingstoke.
