Petersfield 3 Southampton II 2: PETERSFIELD hosted bottom side Southampton and were eager to bounce back from their previous narrow loss against Chichester.

Petersfield flew into action, and immediately took control of the game. They built wave after wave of attacks, yet Southampton sat deep and held off their efforts. Petersfield won a handful of penalty corners, yet a well-rehearsed defensive line prevented the ball from crossing the line.

Southampton had limited chances in the first half as the Petersfield team worked hard to win possession back from the visitors, yet Southampton took the lead when they scored from a well worked counter attack.

Petersfield were soon back on level terms when forward Harris squeezed a shot past the goalkeeper.

Petersfield’s passing accuracy increased in the second half and the home side won a penalty corner when Verney was fouled in the circle. Harris deflected the penalty corner into the goal to give Petersfield the lead.

The goal raised Petersfield’s spirits, leading to a third goal scored by Atkinson. Southampton responded with their own penalty corner routine to make it 3-2, but Petersfield saw out the rest of the game to claim the three points.

Petersfield jumped into third spot in the Hampshire Division 2 table, and the team face a trip to Bournemouth’s third team, where they will look to claim another win and keep the chase on for the second promotion spot.
