FOLLOWING their 5-1 home win against Chichester’s second team last week, Petersfield Squash Club’s first team have continued their recovery from the lower half of the Hampshire Men’s Division 1 table with a close 3-2 win away against Wykeham’s third team.
Sam Shuff was called up for the first team for the third time in his short career, and he completed a 12-match winning run.
Shuff took time to get used to opponent Arif Faizi’s style, losing the first game 9-3. Andy Brinded coached Shuff in the interval and he came out a different person. He won the next three games convincingly to set the foundations for the team’s win.
Ashley started the first game aggressively, leading all the way 9-3. Ashley went 6-1 down in the second game and dug deep to win 9-7.
In the third game it was even at 8-8, but Ashley closed it out at the first opportunity 9-8 to win 3-0.
New boy Rob Anderson lost heavily 3-0 to Andrew Kettlewell, with home advantage preventing him from getting a grip in the match.
Brinded lost his first game 9-3. Some quick trick shots and fast deceptive play gave him the second and the fourth games, but Ian Berrill won the fifth game 9-3.
Team captain Jonathan Graham took time to adjust to the different courts against Alan Rhynes. He lost the first game 9-5 after a long battle. The turning point came in the second game, which Graham won 10-9.
Graham won the next two games 9-3, 9-5 to seal the team win 3-2 and get the additional bonus points.
