Petersfield 4 Winchester III 3: PETERSFIELD faced a tough test against Winchester’s third team.
The home side took the lead when Hughes-Stanton went past the Winchester defenders down the right hand side and slipped the ball across the baseline to Gray, who sent the ball flying into the top right-hand corner.
The visitors then grabbed two goals to take the lead, one from a penalty corner play and another from overloading the circle.
J Atkinson had other ideas, however, and powered his way through the Winchester defence to level the scores at 2-2 after his younger brother had passed the ball to him.
Winchester took the lead in the second half when they profited from an interception and counter-attacked to score, but the hosts picked their heads up and immediately reacted in a positive way.
Harris ran at the Winchester defence and released the ball to J Atkinson, who carried the ball into the circle, drew two men close, raised his stick and struck the ball into the goal, levelling the score once again.
Petersfield’s Hawkins was caught out and was sent to the sin bin, and Edney replaced Alder but was instantly sent to the sin bin for a foul near the halfway mark.
Petersfield held firm and pressed for the winner when back to full strength. They won a penalty corner and Hind pushed the ball out to Edney. A firm slap across goal found Harris, who deflected the ball over the diving keeper and into the net.
