PETERSFIELD Rugby Club’s under-12s returned from Sunday’s tournament at Worthing with another award to add to their honours.
The tournament began with 12 teams split across a three-pool system and, as the event was open to all players, Field had a squad of 15 to select from. The red team faced Crowborough in a tight opening match. The game was 0-0 until the final minute when Hussell fought his way over the line to clinch the win.
Hussell was injured in the attempt and did not play any further part in the day.
A tight game followed against Hove A, where a fine defensive performance by Field resulted in a 0-0 draw.
The final pool match, against Pulborough, was won 2-0. For the first try, Whitear chipped the ball through for Horsfall, the favourable bounce ensuring a clean take and grounding. Goldmann’s try then sealed the win.
The result placed Field as pool winners and they progressed to the next stage of the cup competition with Haywards Heath, Crowborough and Uckfield.
The first match, against Crowborough, was a tough affair which finished 0-0. The second, against Haywards Heath, was a little more one-sided, as Field won 2-0.
The final match of the day, against Uckfield, finished 1-1. Davey gave Field the lead, but Uckfield scored a leveller in the final play of the game.
Crowborough and Petersfield topped the second stage rankings with the same statistics. A penalty shoot-out followed, and both teams selected three kickers. Crowborough failed to score, but Jackson and Brockwell converted their kicks for Field.
