Farnborough under-16s 17 Petersfield under-16s 29: PETERSFIELD Rugby Club’s under-16s travelled to Farnborough for the final league match of the season.

Already with five victories under their belt and the league title in the bag, Petersfield were keen to win and mark the end of an era and their step up to the colts next year. From the kick-off Petersfield exerted early pressure on the Farnborough scrum and line. Petersfield went up within the first 15 minutes with a fly hack from Keohane on the wing being converted by Mackintosh with a strong burst through the centre. Kay converted. There followed a long break as one of the Farnborough players sustained a nasty shoulder injury. When play resumed, Petersfield went to sleep and allowed Farnborough through for an easy try, which they converted. At half time the scores were level despite Petersfield’s superiority at breakdowns, set pieces and open play.

Unperturbed, Petersfield stepped back into the ring and went through the phases, and good scrummage pressure saw Casson release early ball to Kay on to Renwick Gray who powered his way over the try line. Kay converted from the touch line. Petersfield then conceded a number of penalties and Farnborough boosted their score with a penalty under the posts. Petersfield had to dig deep and Kay slotted a penalty from the ten-metre line to increase Petersfield’s lead. Some rugged rucking led to the move of the match as Higson was released to sprint 60 metres, leaving the opposition for dead and scoring under the posts. Kay converted. Petersfield’s tails were truly up now and a fine piercing run from Higginbotham with good support from Caines saw the pack leader drive over the line for a gutsy try. Farnborough retaliated with a final try but victory in the end went to the visitors.
