Petersfield under-16s 44 Andover under-16s 26: ANOTHER victory at the weekend saw Petersfield Rugby Club’s under-16s secure the Hampshire League title with a clean sweep of results.
An impressive performance from the confident Petersfield squad on their home pitch saw off visitors Andover in style.
After Petersfield started strongly and exerted early pressure, a well taken interception from a speedy Andover back saw the visitors score early under the posts against the run of play. Unperturbed, Petersfield calmly reverted to the game plan and continued to pile on the pressure.
With all the possession from a revved up pack, the backs started distributing good ball to Keohane, Higson and Newton. The pressure soon told with Higson going over in the corner after a good off load from Gray. Higson was the recipient soon after of a good flat pass from Kay and went over in the same corner for a well taken try. The pack were now like men possessed and rucked and mauled Andover out of the game. Wilde picked up a loose ball and drove five metres to score Petersfield’s third try.
Petersfield continued to play attractive and attacking rugby after half time, and Higson showed his pace with a 50 metre dash to the Andover line. Petersfield’s centres then showed their strength, and Gray produced a powerful run to score in the corner. Petersfield’s tails were up, and Kay dummied three times to score under the posts. Wilde popped up again to drive over from ten metres out for another try. Captain Casson then weaved his way through the Andover team to score under the posts.
Andover kept going and scored three times, but Petersfield won comfortably to seal the title.
