Guildford Veterans 1 Petersfield Veterans 4: A FINE performance by Petersfield Veterans saw off a strong Guildford side.

Petersfield started at pace, with Cleife, Cunliffe and Burns slicing through Guildford at will.

Despite Petersfield’s dominance Guildford were far from out of it, and Rowland, Williams and Cornelius had to be at the top of their game to keep the home side at bay.

Smart hockey kept the chances coming for Burns and Parker, but good goalkeeping kept the ball out of the Guildford net.

Eventually the deadlock was broken when Cunliffe’s penalty corner strike found its way into the goal via the feet of a couple of defenders.

Petersfield dominated the remainder of the first half but, despite good chances for Parker, Hulme, Cleife and Cunliffe, the Guildford goal held firm.

The hobbling Pruden came on at the start of the second half and his more direct approach maintained Petersfield’s pressure on the Guildford goal.

After five minutes his trademark switch onto the reverse stick drew a good save from the Guildford keeper, but the rebound was smashed into the top corner on the reverse stick to double Petersfield’s lead.

Guildford then pulled one back after Petersfield lost the ball in midfield. Petersfield responded through two Pruden goals, who finished from close range following concerted pressure.

Petersfield’s victory took their 100 per cent winning run in Wessex Masters hockey to two years.
