Petersfield Veterans 9 Newbury & Thatcham Veterans 0: THE VETERANS sealed the league title with a 9-0 victory, as Chichester faltered.
Petersfield deservedly went ahead after ten minutes through Cleife’s finish from Liddle’s pass. Cleife then doubled the lead with a neat finish from Cornett’s fine pass from the right.
Although Petersfield were awarded a number of penalty corners they were dealt with some ease by the visitors’ defence, until a more elaborate routine saw Pruden finish from a yard after Cleife’s shot hit the post.
Parker then hooked in a wicked Cleife shot off his nose and Cleife completed the scoring for the first half with a deft flick.
In the second half Parker’s shot was saved on the line by a visiting defender’s foot, but the resulting penalty flick was saved by the keeper who guessed right when Parker went for placement rather than power.
Petersfield then upped the tempo and an exquisite pass from White found Pruden whose shot was blocked, only to be met by a rapier reverse stick shot from Cunliffe into the bottom corner.
This was followed by Cleife’s fourth, finishing with a smart flick over the keeper from Cornett’s cross.
Pruden scored Petersfield’s eighth, threading the ball through a small gap from Liddle’s early pass.
Williams completed the scoring when he cantered into the visitors’ D and finished with a no-nonsense strike from 16 yards to spark euphoric celebrations for his first goal in six seasons of veterans’ hockey.
