Petersfield Veterans 3 Guildford Veterans 2: FOR THE second game in a row, Petersfield’s depleted side came from behind to win a hard-fought game.

The home side started brightly enough, with the unfamiliar midfield partnership of Dean, Wheeler, Hoe and Cook-Priest finding space to put the ball through to Dryden-Brownlee, Cleife and Casabianca, but the Guildford defence held firm.

Guildford looked dangerous in attack and, after a couple of good saves, Broadmeadow in the Petersfield goal could only parry a pass to the unmarked forward at the far post, who had a simple tap-in. Shortly afterwards, the hosts conceded after a soft penalty corner.

Hulme and Budden then entered the fray, giving a little more bite, but despite Cleife’s best dribbling efforts and Dryden-Brownlee’s hard running, Petersfield could not get past the Guildford defence.

Hulme’s and Terry’s influence in midfield began to tell in the second half, with chances becoming more frequent for the home side.

It took a freak goal to reduce the deficit, with a Guildford defender walking Cleife’s pass into his own net.

Thompson then thumped a penalty corner home to draw Petersfield level.

Three more penalty corners went begging, but Wheeler’s neat finish saw Petersfield go ahead with ten minutes to play.

Either side could have scored in the dying minutes, but Cornelius, Thompson and Budden ensured that the Petersfield defence held firm to secure the win.
