Southampton II 1 Petersfield 3: AFTER starting the season with a win against Chichester, Petersfield’s spirits were high ahead of the match against Southampton.
It wasn’t long before Petersfield had Southampton on the back foot as J Atkinson’s shot hit the back of the net, putting Petersfield 1-0 ahead after ten minutes.
Petersfield were awarded a green card in the first half as W Atkinson was sinbinned for breaking the five-metre rule.
The team stood their ground while down to ten men, and the defence held strong until W Atkinson’s return.
With the first half drawing to an end Hind dribbled into the circle, pulled the ball on to his reverse side and scored a reverse shot goal which gave Petersfield a 2-0 lead at half time.
Petersfield made a shaky start to the second half as Southampton caught out their visitors with a change of press. The change of attack gave Southampton a penalty corner which was converted past keeper Smith.
With the score now 2-1, Petersfield regained their strength and regained control of the game.
However, Lane fell foul of the five-metre rule, and Petersfield were down to ten players.
The visitors absorbed the pressure well, and were still 2-1 up when Lane returned.
Southampton almost equalised when they hit the post, but Petersfield then caught the hosts on the break when J Atkinson sent his shot through the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 3-1.
