Petersfield III 5 Wimborne Wayferers 6: PETERSFIELD Hockey Club’s men’s third team lost by the odd goal in 11, as their unbeaten start to the season ended against Wimborne Wayferers’ second team.

Starting with yet another three junior debutants, a very young and small home side faced a Wimborne team who came firing out of the blocks.

Wimborne moved the ball at pace from the off and dominated possession in the early phases of the game. Charlie Weller in goal was exposed on a number of occasions and the away team made their superiority pay with two goals.

Petersfield gradually came back into the game with Steve Liddle spreading the ball nicely from the base of midfield. The home team got on to the scoresheet with some route one hockey. Nick Budden launched an aerial from the top of his own D which bounced through the Wimborne defence for Sam Gibbon to latch on to. He drove to the baseline and pulled back a pass for John Budden to slot home.

Petersfield drew level just before the break when Jonty Roberts created space in the D to fire home at the far post.

The second half started with a quickfire double from the away team to re-establish a two-goal lead. Ben White then slammed home from a neat short corner routine to narrow the margin again.

Wimborne took the score to 5-3 before Nick Budden converted a penalty stroke after White was fouled when clean through on the keeper.

With five minutes remaining Weller was exposed as the defence parted in front of him and the two-goal gap was established once again.

There was still time for Gibbon to score the last goal of the match, diving to deflect the ball into the roof of the net when White picked out his run from wide. Weller finished by brilliantly keeping a fierce shot out with his left toe and a breathless game finished 6-5.
