Petersfield under-16s 32 Havant under-16s 12: PETERSFIELD hosted Havant for their first league match of the season.

With a good bench to call upon, Field had the benefit of a nearly full strength team for the first time this season.

From the start, Havant piled on the pressure very effectively and scored within the first two minutes, duly converted. Further Havant pressure caused Field to slowly wake up to the challenge and, after some hectic defence within their 22, the pendulum gradually began to swing.

Field started to control the set piece, winning good lineout ball thanks to Dodds and Nicholson. With commitment from Mumtaz, Wilde, Truman and Keohane, the Field pack secured good possession with dogged rucking and mauling, and Casson was able to release the backs with Kay and Rushin running good lines of attack.

The pressure now piled on Havant and Renwick Gray picked and drove through the Havant line for an impressive try. Kay converted to level the score.

At half time Field put on some fresh legs but again it was Havant who took the early lead with a solo try from their fullback, unconverted.

However, with so much dominance in the lineout, set scrum and rucks, Field’s backs were again given the chance to show their class with Higson and Hughes sniping away at the wings.

Havant began to concede penalties which Kay punished from every angle, building up the scoreline in Field’s favour. Some lovely running and interplay from Newton and Joseph down the touchline saw Joseph in for a try. Kay converted.

Belcher, Elston and Rushin were controlling play with some intelligent kicking from Kay to keep Havant pinned down into their half. A crosskick saw Keast at the far corner to collect and score a lovely try. With their tails well and truly up, Field continued to dominate and good pressure from Hall, Titley, Beach, Foster and Fitzgerald led to a driving run from Gray to score a final try, which Kay converted.
