Petersfield 2nd XV 5 Havant 3rd XV 17: PETERSFIELD’S second team welcomed Havant’s third team to Penns Place for a well-fought contest in Hampshire 2.

Field started the match brightly following the visitors’ kick-off, but breaks were too often unsupported and Havant were able to turn over possession.

Even in contested breakdowns, Havant competed well and managed to nullify Field’s dominance of possession in the opening quarter.

The visitors weathered the early storm and hit back clinically when they got the opportunity and scored a converted try.

Havant then scored a penalty and a second converted try to lead 17-0 at half time.

Will Mathews entered the fray in the second half and made an immediate impact.

Petersfield’s pack worked better after the break and created some space for the backs to exploit.

Carl Sharrock broke powerfully through the middle before feeding Mathews, who put Dan Giles in to score, although the try was unconverted.

Havant had their chances in the second half but the Field defence worked well to keep them out. The flow of the game was disrupted by some ill-discipline and poor handling from both teams but, overall, Field continued to exert the most pressure.

The home side had a number of attempts to cross the whitewash again but ultimately they fell short.

Field won the second half but were not fluid enough throughout to make the possession tell.
