WITH former coach Andy Patience taking a step back from the top job at the end of last season, Petersfield Rugby Club will welcome the start of the 2016-17 season with new men at the helm of their senior rugby side – James Alder as head coach and James Clayson as assistant head coach and player development manager.
The new duo have a mandate to shape and steer the existing coaching team as the club looks to build on its playing numbers and Hampshire league status.
Alder arrives having been assistant coach at Winchester Rugby Football Club and brings more than 30 years of rugby league and union experience having played professional rugby league for Leigh Centurions as well as representing the Army. Currently studying for a Bachelor of Science degree in applied sports and exercise at Winchester University, he intends to share his knowledge and experience in all areas of the game with the club.
Alder said: “I arrive full of energy and enthusiasm for the new season at Petersfield and looking forward to developing the large pool of players with the coaching team.”
Clayson arrives having orchestrated the turnaround in the playing fortunes of Southsea Nomads RFC last season, and he is focused on bringing his Australian brand of play and player development to the club.
Clayson said: “I am looking forward to my new challenge at Petersfield RFC as well as the partnership with James. As a coach, it is always refreshing to see a club with a positive attitude to its rugby and player/coach development.”
