Petersfield 27 Isle of White 24: PETERSFIELD’S first team beat visitors Isle of White to go to the top of the table.

Field broke the deadlock when Josh Haslett scored out wide on the left, which made his following conversion too difficult to complete.

Field switched off at the restart and their defence was parted by a simple break, with pace taking the visitors through for the levelling score. The visitors scored again five minutes later, and this time the try was scored near the posts, making the extras a formality.

It was Field’s forward pressure that led to the team’s next score at the start of the second quarter. Franko Tomic charged down a clearance kick in the Isle of Wight 22 and chased the ball over the line to touch down.

Field’s chance to level the scores was cruelly denied as Haslett’s kick struck the post.

Field returned to scoring ways ten minutes later with a powerful scrum setting up Matt Painter for a run to the line before slipping the ball to Fraser Patience who finished the job. This time the conversion was a success and Field had a five-point lead.

The visitors carved Field open within minutes of the restart to finish the half two points ahead of their hosts.

Field regained the lead after the break when Harley Orr crashed over from the back of a ruck five metres from the line. Haslett slotted the conversion and a penalty five minutes later to give Field an eight-point lead.

The visitors then returned to the fray and scored out wide. The conversion was missed and Field saw out the game to win by three points.
