Petersfield 20 Overton 12: PETERSFIELD beat Overton on Saturday in the Gales HSB Hampshire Plate semi finals.
Field opened the scoring after ten minutes, working through the phases before Chad White took advantage of a hole to bustle over the line. The ever reliable Josh Haslett slotted the extras.
Minutes later, the visitors mounted an unassailable drive to the line for the replying try. The conversion across the strong wind was too difficult and Field held a narrow two-point lead.
In the second half stand-off Jack Glancy was sin binned for an infringement at the breakdown. The blow did not appear to phase Field, however, and Overton conceded a penalty at the breakdown and an Overton player joined Glancy in the sin bin.
Field’s 14 men kept the visitors pinned the own half and, with Glancy restored, crept closer to the try line. The ball was recycled quickly and Palmer ignored the attentions of four defenders to ground the ball on the line.
The hosts continued their territorial dominance and Glancy essayed a chip that should have been taken for the mark in the Overton 22. The catch was botched though and Field were quickest to the loose ball, spreading it wide to winger Eddie Matthews who finished with aplomb in the corner.
With five minutes to go, Overton presented Field with a penalty in front of the posts and Matt Painter kicked it to take Field beyond two converted tries of their guests.
The visitors scored a consolation try, and the final whistle sounded as the conversion split the posts.
