Petersfield 36 Romsey 12: PETERSFIELD’S first team took on Romsey on Saturday.
Field’s guests had only won two of their seven games so far this season, but the hosts could not afford any complacency. The first ten minutes were a torrid time for the Field defence, which finally buckled to allow the first score of the game. Romsey failed to add the extras but they had taken the lead.
Five minutes before the end of the first quarter Field’s pack drove towards the centre of the posts, and flanker Toby Sydenham crashed over between the posts. Matt Painter added the extras to give Field the lead.
A Romsey flanker was sin-binned for collapsing a lineout drive to the line, and the hosts then walked their guests back over their try line, where Harley Orr calmly touched down. Minutes later a five-metre scrum travelled the short distance to the line and Orr had a brace of tries and Field had a sizeable lead.
Field went on the hunt for the fourth, bonus point, try. Harry Attwood finished off a move with a powerful run, bursting two tackles on his way to the line to give Field a 19-point lead at half time.
Romsey scored a try seven minutes into the second half and a flat kick from wide on the left secured the extras.
Field regained some of the lost points through another penalty lineout drive, with Sydenham adding another brace for the back row union.
A second Romsey player was then sin-binned and Tom Franks crossed the line and Painter added the extras.
Romsey had a third player sin-binned but battled on to deny Field another score.
