Winchester 69 Petersfield 0: PETERSFIELD crashed to an emphatic defeat at league leaders Winchester.

The visitors had a number of players unavailable foe selection, and head coach James Alder had to pick a new combination of players to fill the team.

Alder even had to put himself on the substitutes bench to fill out the 18-man squad.

When the sides met earlier in the season Field had managed to put 19 points on the board but were still comprehensibly beaten by Winchester. This time they were unable to take a single point off their hosts, who ran rampant at times to amass their points haul.

Winchester scored their fourth try after half an hour to earn the bonus point, added a fifth just before half time and then piled on six more tries in the second half.

The only real negative for the home side was a yellow card conceded just minutes before the final whistle.

Field started brightly and had the best of the opening minutes, pinning Winchester back into their own 22 and threatening the home team’s line before conceding a penalty to let the Winchester defence off the hook.

The visitors also had a brief flurry towards the end of the second half when they came close to scoring, but they were again let down by their inaccuracy.

Field’s scrum was once again dominant against heftier foes and the pack were able to compete at the breakdown – to the extent that Winchester were constantly penalised for skulduggery on the deck.
