Romsey 6 Petersfield 22: IT TOOK a while for Field to get going on Saturday against third-from-bottom Romsey and, at times, it looked as though they wouldn’t get the bonus point they needed.
Field started brightly enough, with Ryan Morse finishing a series of forward-powered phases by crashing over after just five minutes.
However, despite having the bulk of territory and possession Field failed to add to their tally until five minutes before the end of the half when Eddie Matthews scored two unconverted tries in quick succession to take Field to a 17-0 lead.
The winger took advantage of a barnstorming run by fellow back, Kieran Gericke, who was finally felled half a metre from the line. It was a simple job for Matthews to pick up and pop the ball down over the line.
Minutes later, Field’s dominant scrum set the platform for the backs to attack and straight running and sensible passing set Matthews up for his second.
A penalty allowed Romsey to cut Field’s lead to 14 points at half time.
In the second half Sam Brown, came close to scoring for Field, dropping the ball short of the line due to the attention of two defenders.
Field continued to press and, minutes later, had their bonus-point as Chris Ellis popped up on the left wing to punch over from ten metres out. Josh Haslett’s kick again failed to gain the extras as the ball bounced back off the far upright. The scrappy play continued until the end of the match, the only other score of the half being another penalty to Romsey.
