Petersfield 82 Chineham 3: ON PAPER, Field’s home match against Chineham looked as though it should be a formality given the visitors’ record in the league showed 14 loses in their 17 matches played so far.
Field opened their account after just two minutes through Jay Bremner. Josh Haslett added the extras.
The visitors then slotted a penalty from just outside the 22 to peg Field back to a four-point margin, and the hectic opening ten minutes concluded with Franks powering over for Field’s second try.
Haslett then took advantage of an easy penalty kick.
Field scored two more tries before the half ended. One came through a powerful solo drive through three defenders by Harley Orr, and the other came when Haslett showed his pace to give Field a 27-3 lead at half time.
Chineham had suffered numerous injuries which severely reduced their squad, and Gareth Crane scored a try for Field after just one minute of the second half.
Chineham’s injury woes then took their toll and the scrums had to be uncontested. Field set up a series of phases from the first uncontested scrum and Ryan Morse powered over to score. Haslett added the extras.
Field scored three more tries before the end of the third quarter. Eddie Matthew and Haslett both showed good pace to score, and Toby Sydenham bashed through the defence from close in.
Field scored a further four tries in the last quarter. Haslett scored two more tries to bring his tally to four, and Michael Robbins and Jamie Williams claimed one try apiece from close range.
