Fareham Heathens 8 Petersfield 31: PETERSFIELD’S first team earned an impressive win away at Fareham Heathens.

Field had an early chance to put points on the board with a penalty, but kicker Josh Haslett couldn’t quite master the awful conditions and the ball passed just wide.

Undeterred, Field kept probing and scored the first of their five tries, with back row Toby Sydenham benefitting from the pack’s dominance in a driving maul.

Field claimed their second try when Tom Franks scored with a powerful run. Haslett added the conversion to give the team a 12-0 lead. Fareham responded and successfully converted a penalty.

Field scored their third when the ball was passed from one side of the pitch to the other and Gareth MacGillivray finished emphatically in the corner. The conversion went begging, but Field went into the break with a healthy 14-point lead.

The second half started with Heathens picking up the pace, but Franks scored his second try and secured the bonus-point fourth try for the visitors. Haslett slotted the conversion and Field had effectively sealed the victory.

Fareham kept plugging away and made it into Field’s 22. The visitors defended manfully on their own line but, after withstanding ten phases, Fraser Patience was shown yellow for an infringement at the breakdown and Fareham took advantage to score their sole try.

Field scored their fifth try when Gareth Crane finished under the posts to give Haslett an easy conversion.
