Petersfield 26 Weybridge Vandals 24: PETERSFIELD faced Weybridge Vandals in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

In the first half Field easily dominated territory and possession, and two tries to one saw the first half end 12-5 to the home side.

Field were under the cosh for a lot of the game in the second half and only survived a few breaks due to the profligacy of the Vandals – on at least two occasions the visitors passed the ball into touch when an overlap was on the cards.

It was no real surprise then when Weybridge scored a converted try to level the game.

Field fought back and, eventually, Nick Blumlein managed to break the line of defence to scamper home for a try by the posts to make his subsequent conversion a formality.

Weybridge continued to hammer on the Field door, their relentless attack being rewarded with two more tries – one of which was converted – and the lead of the match with just five minutes to go.

Shortly afterwards, Field lost a player to the sin bin.

However, the red team were in a useful attacking position and, when their guests fumbled the ball, struck quickly to level the game once more and then win by a narrow margin as Blumlein casually kicked the conversion to make it 26-24.

Petersfield’s first team begin their league campaign on the road at Portsmouth on Saturday.

The second team are at home to Winchester’s third team.
