Petersfield won 48-17 at Bognor to make it fives victories out of five in Hampshire Counties One.
Bognor took the game to Petersfield in a way that belied their seventh place in the league.
For the first six minutes Field were pinned in their own half, often not advancing beyond their 22.
A penalty in front of the posts for a Field high tackle saw Bognor open the scoring.
Miles Sampson was yellow carded seven minutes later for offering advice to the referee.
A penalty lineout for Field 15 metres from the try line was cleanly taken and set up a trademark rolling maul which had Nic Wilde finally drop to the ground with the ball to score a try. Nick Blumlein added the conversion.
Will Matthews was substituted on 25 minutes for a blood injury. Carl Sharrock came off the bench and some reshuffling was needed.
Petersfield resisted Bognor’s attacks until Sampson was restored.
Petersfield used the modest amount of possession their hosts allowed them to score a splendid try. The ball passed through eight pairs of hands from the centre to the left wing and back to the right, where debutant Sam Dawes galloped 20 metres to score a converted try and make it 14-3.
After the restart Bognor attacked, only for Sharrock to tackle their ball carrier with such force that Franco Tomic won the ball.
He passed to captain Matt Momber, who combined with Liam Perkins and Jackson Clark to cross the halfway line.
Second row Zak Jenkins, scrum half Alex Duffus and flanker Rhys Bowen made metres until they could pass to Sampson, who jinked through two tackles to score to the right of the uprights for Blumlein to convert.
After 35 minutes prop Dan Luff – who had been mighty in the scrum and mauls – was replaced by Ryan Moore.
A good lineout take by Perkins and a speedy pass from Duffus went though three pairs of hands to sprinting full-back Tom Land, who ran 30 metres to offload to his support.
Two tackles by the retreating Bognor defence saw Field offload in the tackle on both occasions for the rampaging Momber to snatch the ball and leap over his man to dive and score a converted try.
Field led 28-3 at half-time.
Two minutes into the second half Field’s pack combined in a rolling maul for Wilde to touch down for an unconverted try.
Bognor responded with two converted tries and were back in the game at 33-17.
Field replacement winger Toby Colwood then turned on the gas and outpaced the rapid Bognor defenders to touchdown in the left corner for an unconverted try.
Perkins then scored a try after a bullocking run through three defenders.
George Davis scored the last Petersfield try, which was just reward for his work around the park with the ball or in tackles.
Blumlein missed his fourth conversion attempt of the half.
Petersfield second team beat Bognor’s second team 31-5 in a friendly fixture at Penns Place.
