Petersfield Colts 5 Tottonians 58: HAVING won their opening league match of the season last Sunday, Petersfield’s Colts set themselves a very stern test this week with a friendly match against Tottonians, from the league above.
Totts got off to a flying start and were 22 points to the good before Field started to wake up and play rugby. A well-structured side with some large lads, Totts deserved to be on top and were more dominant in the breakdown and clinical in attack.
Despite the visitors adding a further 19 points in the first half it was not all one way traffic; Field had some good passages of play and executed some good multiple phase rugby. However with some players missing in key positions a number of promising opportunities went awry. A few misplaced kicks and questionable tactical decisions from Field never saw them quite trouble the scoreboard until the second half. Even so there were some moments of really good passages of play from Field including a move that saw Devlin release Seaman who burst through and enable Hirst to blister down the wing.
In the second half Field were more composed and aggressive at the breakdown and Hirst was to score first with a try for Field. He had a very good all round game and Heath made some solid tackles in the backs but it was the forwards, notably Cole and Ullyott, who were outstanding in the ruck and stoic in defence.
Field played much better in the second half but Totts continued to play their game. While Field held Totts at bay for most of the half they did concede a further try, and gifted another, as the game finished 58-5.
