PETERSFIELD Rugby Football Club’s season has started with silverware as its colts team won a touch rugby competition at HMS Temeraire, Portsmouth.

Organised as part of the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour, the touch rugby festival featured Field’s rivals from around the county.

The format of touch rugby is very similar to the seven-a-side game, except with only six players on the pitch at any one time and touch tackling instead of full contact.

Given the hectic nature of the format, Field appeared to start the competition with an immediate disadvantage; their squad of just eight players was matched against the 15-man squads of some of the best teams in Hampshire.

Field got off to a fast start beating Vectis 1-0 before immediately turning over the much-fancied Havant with an impressive 3-1 victory.

After a break, the players returned to the fray with three games back-to-back. They comfortably beat both Portsmouth, and Gosport and Fareham 2-0. Then defeated US Portsmouth 2-1 to take the overall title.

Petersfield’s under-15 team were also unbeaten throughout their campaign but were pipped at the post by Gosport and Fareham.

The teams met in the final game of the competition each knowing a win would crown them champions. Field battled to the end and scored from the last move of the game to draw the match.

With the teams tied for results, the decision went to a count back of total tries scored, handing Gosport the competition.
