Petersfield 2nd XV 19 Chineham 2nd XV 5: PETERSFIELD’S second team took care of business at home against their counterparts from Chineham on Saturday.
The victory was the second team’s fifth on the bounce. In truth, Field could have had more than the three-tries they scored – Brophy and Orr in the first half and Samworth in the second – but the execution wasn’t perhaps as sharp as it could have been. On a few occasions the ball was held rather being than released along the backline and a few passes were attempted when the better option was to hold and take contact. That said, the conditions were not optimal for an expansive game and both teams suffered from dropped balls and wayward passes.
Field dominated in the set piece and their scrum was so effective that all of the home side’s tries arose from them. First scrum-half Brophy’s touched down as the pack pushed the visitors over the line from a five-metre penalty scrum. Next Orr sniped from short distance after another dominant five-metre scrum allowed Field to set up a couple of quick phases on the Chineham line. Samworth then converted Field’s pressure into points as they drove their opposite numbers off a defensive five-metre scrum. Despite the gusting, unpredictable wind, Groves’ boot added two of the three conversions.
