Portsmouth 3rd XV 5 Petersfield 2nd XV 36: PETERSFIELD’S second team were looking to make it three wins on the bounce as they travelled to Portsmouth.
Field got the game underway and immediately applied pressure to the home side.
When Portsmouth tried to play Field’s defence snuffed them out, but when Field gained possession and started building phases their poor decision-making and execution gifted respite to Portsmouth’s defence.
Field managed just one score in the first quarter. Gerry Devlin scooped up a loose ball and executed a timely switch with Steve Woolcombe, who put Dan Giles away for the try.
By the end of a scrappy first half Field had three tries and Portsmouth had one try.
At half time Field brought on the entire bench. The impact of these players was immediate and Field set up camp deep inside Pompey’s half, only to be thwarted by ill-discipline. Joe Mayell was sent to the sin bin, where he was joined by Sam Rushmer.
Despite the disruption of the yellow cards, the injection of fresh legs allowed Field to dominate the game.
Chad White went on a darting run and avoided the entire Portsmouth back line to secure Field’s next score.
From the re-start Field pushed wide to stretch the tiring Portsmouth forwards. Rory Munro cut through the centres, but Munro’s unselfish pass on the try line to Matt Painter was dropped.
Despite that missed opportunity Field eventually ran out easy winners, scoring six well-worked tries – three of which were converted.
