Petersfield under-13s 30 Fareham Heathens under-13s 5: THE SUN came out again to welcome Fareham Heathens to Penns Place to meet Petersfield’s under-13s.

In their first youth rugby fixture the home side had secured a healthy victory over the Heathens’ near neighbours, Gosport and Fareham.

The session started with a joint warm-up and training session with some specific forwards and backs drills incorporated. It was then down to business with a game consisting of three 20-minute periods, with pitch one providing the enthusiastic crowd with a prime location for spectating.

Both sides had around 20 players with rolling substitutes, which was much needed given the big step up in pitch size.

Field got off to a quick start with a running try by Carey, who broke through the defence to run in at the corner, and this was followed swiftly by another try from Needham Laing.

The forwards were working well, winning ball in both the set piece and in open play, and the service to the backs led to Carrol running in two tries after some quick ball through the hands.

Field didn’t slack off at the start of the second period, with the backs playing some flowing rugby with ball from the ruck.

The possession and handling gave Palmer the opportunity to run in another good try from the wing.

Field added their sixth try in the final period as the forwards continued to dominate and feed their hungry backs. Doran ran in the try to seal the 30-5 win.
