STEEP Tennis Club were in action in the Aegon Team Tennis campaign on Sunday, with all three Steep teams playing.

The men’s first team were at home to Lee-on-the Solent.

Steep were 3-1 down after the singles, with captain Dave Gaterell, Jon Graham and Marcus Crowe recording losses, while only Matt Fernandez recorded a win in his usual solid style.

Fernandez and Barry Carter were able to grab a victory in the doubles, but Gaterell and Crowe were unable to match that and the team went down 4-2 after a typically tough performance from Lee-on-the Solent.

The men’s second team were more successful away to Littleton, with captain Philippe Mougin, Matt Swanton and Izaak Hews all recording singles wins, while Freddie Green lost a very close battle on a tiebreak.

At 3-1 up the team needed just one doubles victory, but earned two, with Green and Mougin and Hews and Swanton only dropping three games between them all.

Steep’s under-16 team began their campaign against a Bassett side which was made up mostly of under-14 players and one 15-year-old.

Jamie Allardice lost a closely-fought singles, and Ben Clark also recorded a loss after a close first set.

However, Ivor Ross and Elliot White recorded wins to level the match at 2-2.

Allardice and Ross lost their doubles on the tiebreak, but Clark and White won convincingly to leave the teams at 3-3.

A tiebreak shootout was then held, with Bassett the eventual winners.
