SUNDAY saw Steep Tennis Club host two home matches in the Aegon Team Tennis event, as well as attend an away match.

The under-16s side consisting of Benjy Page, Elliot White, Jake Wadsley and Angus Forbes hosted a strong Denmead team. The visiting team were just too good this time, recording a 6-0 victory against the Steep juniors.

The men’s B team were also at home, against David Lloyd Southampton. Led by captain Matt Thompson, with junior Henry Thomas, Justin Blott and Izaak Hews, the team gave a solid performance, posting a 6-0 victory against the visitors.

The men’s B team now have three wins out of three matches, with two left to play this season.

The men’s A team visited Wyvern Tennis Club, in Fair Oak, and had 14-year-old Oli Fernandez in their team.

Fernandez started his tennis career at Steep around five years ago, attending a talent identification day at the club.

Fernandez was quick to improve and five years later is now one of Hampshire’s top county juniors and is looking to go much higher.

The match started well, with all four Steep singles players winning in convincing fashion.

Captain and head coach Dave Gaterell and Fernandez teamed up to win the doubles in quick style, as did second pair Jon Graham and Philippe Mougin.

The men’s A team has now won two out of three in what is looking to be a closely fought league that won’t be decided until the last match.

There are two more outings for the men’s A team.
