TENNIS coach David Gaterell has won the over-35s doubles title at the British Senior Grass Court Championships, held this year at Surbiton Tennis Club.
Partnering Great Britain captain Michael Ellames, of Essex, Gaterell secured his second national title, having previously won the over-35s doubles at the British Clay Court Championships in Bournemouth in 2014.
Gaterell (40) is the head coach at Steep Tennis Club, where, with an experienced team of coaches, he delivers a year round programme for juniors and adults, from beginner through to competitive players.
Gaterell said: “I don’t believe you need to be a great player to be a great coach – one does not lead to the other – but I do think that as a coach, whatever your level, it helps to compete at times, and keep your mind fresh regarding what it means to put yourself on the line, and have to train and fight to win. And, anyway, it’s a lot of fun. I won’t ever stop, so long as my body allows it.
“We are always encouraging our players to play competitive tennis, be it at club or tournament level, to really get the most out of their tennis experience. We try to lead by example.”
Gaterell has already made two other finals this year on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Seniors’ Tour, firstly winning the singles at The Avenue, Havant, and then coming runner-up at the prestigious St George’s Hill Club, Weybridge.
