STEEP Lawn Tennis Club player and former WRNS officer Ann Saunders has decided to hang up her racket when it comes to any future Royal Navy tennis.
Ann made the decision after she and her partner, team captain Liz Newell, won both their matches at Wimbledon and their team won the Inter-Services Championship.
Last year’s champions, the Royal Air Force, finished second in the Inter-Services Championship, and the British Army finished in third place.
The matches in the Inter-Services Championship were all played in Aorangi Park this year, as there was building work going on south of Henman Hill.
Saunders said: “I think it’s best to leave on a crest of a wave; it was a super day.
“I’ve had nearly 15 years playing for the Royal Navy Vets and it’s time for some of the younger players to get more involved.
“I’ll continue to give them my support in practise and cheering them on at future Inter-Services Championships.”
The Royal Navy had more to celebrate at Wimbledon as their young men’s team won the championship for only the third time since 1996 after a thrilling cliff-hanger last match against the British Army, which clinched the championship for the boys in blue.
