XCEL Trampolining Squad took part in their first Southern Region Trampolining Team Championship on Sunday at The Edge Leisure Centre in Haslemere.
The competition included 13 clubs from across the southern region in two divisions. Each club had selected their top performing gymnasts from the previous season. Xcel took part in Division 2 alongside ten other teams of eight, with two from each team competing in one of four flights.
The first flight saw Xcel’s Amelie Lewis and Caitlin Lloyd compete, followed by Nuala Smith and Grace Gibson in flight two, resulting in the Xcel team holding third position. Flight three, with Macy Gasson and Molly Leveridge, saw Xcel move into first place, before Andrew Lewis and Izzy Greenwood competed in flight four.
There was a nervous wait while the final scores were calculated and checked, before the Xcel team were overjoyed to find that they had held on to first place to take gold and the trophy.
The Xcel squad’s performance ensures their place in Division 1 next year.
In addition, Nuala Smith’s combined scores from her two routines resulted in her achieving the highest individual score in Division 2.
Head coach Lisa Lewis said: “I knew we had a strong team and was hopeful of a medal, but they have surpassed my expectations in their first team competition, and I am immensely proud of their success.”
