WITH all the senior players taking a break from league action on Saturday, it was left to the youth section to fly the flag for competitive rugby in Petersfield on Sunday.
Penns Place was host to an impressive amount of players and spectators as the under-seven to under-12 age groups played a round robin tournament.
With all available space filled – all four pitches plus the training ground – the club sought help from Churcher’s College, who kindly agreed to allow the use of their pitches at Penns Place.
With three teams to their opponents two each the large Field under-ten squad had a numerical advantage, so it was perhaps not too surprising that the Field Red team won their pool with their White team coming in second. The Reds met Portsmouth, winners of group two, in the final, which they won with two unanswered tries.
Field’s under-eights had similar success with their two teams finishing first and second respectively, while the under-nines competition was won by Alton Red with Field finishing second and joint-third. Alton also won the under-12 group with Field finishing second.
Petersfield’s under-13s were also in action, and they won by ten tries to four against Portsmouth.
Petersfield’s under-14s produced a stellar performance as they beat Trojans 59-19. Knowles led the way with five tries, with Keohane getting a brace and Wadsley and Franklin one each. Kay had a good day with the boot taking seven conversions.
With the under-15s winning a tight game away at Bognor and the under-16s in fine form in their win against Havant, the day was brought to a satisfying close for Petersfield.
