ONE of the drivers involved in a car pile up at the notorious Durford Road junction says she remembers a “god-awful bang” as her Seat car was shunted at force onto the grass verge.

Nicola Gummerson was in Durford Road waiting at its junction with Heath Road, Heath Road East and Pulens Lane.

Opposite her in Heath Road, a police car was waiting to cross to Durford Road on its way to the police offices at Penns Place.

Travelling South along Pulens Lane to the junction was a blue Ford driven by a lady from Chichester.

The police car and the Ford collided, and both smashed into the Seat.

Nicola said: “My car was hit with force, it’s very likely written off, and I suffered concussion and minor injuries.

“This was a classic accident for that junction, Pulens Lane is a very dangerous rat run route to Chichester.

“Normally I would have been on my bike; and if I had been I wouldn’t be speaking to you now.

“A Speed Limit Reminder has been installed along Pulens Lane but I have watched cars go past at well over 30mph.

“Traffic lights, or something similar are needed to slow the traffic, and perhaps it should be made one way to force Chichester traffic to go through Sheet and join the A3 at Ramshill.”

A police spokesman said: “We were called out at 2.20pm on January 28 after reports of a three-vehicle collision on Durford Road.

“A white Seat, a blue Ford and a police vehicle were involved in a collision.

“Three people suffered minor injuries as a result and were treated by paramedics.

“No arrests have been made.”

The badly damaged police car was driven to the police offices at Penns Place soon after the accident happened.
