The founder of a Petersfield cleaning company is feeling as proud as a pooch as a puppy he sponsors has become a certified Guide Dog, writes Angelica Wade.

Rob Cunningham of oven cleaning firm Ovenu Petersfield is thrilled his pedigree chum Ralph has graduated from the Guide Dog programme following 18 months of training.

The golden retriever-lab cross – who began his training under Mr Cunningham’s sponsorship in late 2024 – has now been matched with a visually impaired person after a year and half of coaching and development.

The loyal hound will make a life-changing difference to its new owner, giving them a greater sense of independence and freedom in all facets of daily life.

“Ralph has already had a massive impact on his new owner’s life,” said the puppy’s trainer, Leonie.

“They’ve bonded beautifully and are forming a strong partnership.”

Mr Cunningham said: “I’m really pleased to hear Ralph is now a fully trained guide dog.

“It’s great to know he’s out there making a real difference to someone’s life. Supporting Guide Dogs is a fantastic way to give something back, and I’m proud to have played a part in his journey.”

Former sweet-maker Mr Cunningham launched Ovenu Petersfield in early 2021 following a spell in hospital recovering from Covid-19. The founder of the firm, which covers the Petersfield, Butser and Meon Valley areas, has long been a staunch supporter of the good cause.

He originally sponsored a black Labrador, Selsey, but unfortunately this canine companion had to pull out of the programme following some minor medical issues. It was after this that Ralph became his new sponsored puppy.

He added: “Guide Dogs is an incredible charity that transforms lives, and I’m proud to support its life-changing work.”
