POLICE say they are unlikely to release the name today of the woman who died in the incident at a pelican crossing in Petersfield town centre.

Officers are also not expecting to be able to name the woman this weekend.

The fatal incident, described as "horrific" by those who witnessed it, took place in Dragon Street at around 2pm on Tuesday afternoon.

A collision took place between a large lorry and the woman at the pedestrian crossing close to Dragon Street’s junction with the High Street and Heath Road.

She was pronounced dead at the scene and no details have been released publicly yet about her identity.

Investigations at the scene continued until early Tuesday evening and the roads only reopened at around 7pm on Tuesday when the lorry involved in the incident was removed by a recovery vehicle.

Investigations are ongoing and anyone who witnessed what happened and has yet to talk to a police officer is asked to call 101, quoting Operation Security.
