The owner of a horse livery yard in Surrey has been fined £900 for fly-tipping at Whitehill Cemetery.
At Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court, Emma Wickerson, 26, of Horsham Road, Dorking, admitted failing to ensure her waste was removed by a licensed carrier.
The waste – a ton of bags stuffed with equestrian items and household refuse – was subsequently dumped at the cemetery in January.
East Hampshire District Council investigated the tip and officers traced the waste to the livery yard.
Ms Wickerson said she paid a carrier – who could not be traced by council officers – £80 to remove the waste but did not check if they were licensed.
She was also ordered to pay a £90 victim surcharge, £100 costs and £440 compensation to East Hampshire District Council.
The district council’s environmental officer Sonja Reames, who conducted the investigation, said: “The law is quite clear on this subject – a person has a clear duty of care to ensure their waste is disposed of properly.”
